A number of recent medical studies have revealed that isolation is a serious health risk, and seniors are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of loneliness. The National Institute on Aging has written extensively on this subject, stating:
“Research has linked social isolation and loneliness to higher risks for a variety of physical and mental conditions: high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and even death. People who find themselves unexpectedly alone due to the death of a spouse or partner, separation from friends or family, retirement, loss of mobility, and lack of transportation are at particular risk. Conversely, people who engage in meaningful, productive activities with others tend to live longer, boost their mood, and have a sense of purpose.”
Knowing this, socialization isn’t just for fun—it’s critically important to our health and well-being as we age. Our skilled, dedicated caregivers provide joyful companionship to clients, but that’s just one part of a holistic approach to community connection and engagement. Here are some ways seniors can socialize in Toronto, both for enjoyment and the betterment of their health. Where seniors can socialize in Toronto
While socializing with friends, family and neighbours on a regular basis is wonderful, it’s also great for seniors to connect with extended community members. Here’s where to start:
- Local community centres and seniors centres (check out their programming—there’s something for everyone!)
- Toronto Public Library branches (they have a wide variety of events throughout the week, many of which are free and/or geared to seniors)
- Toronto YMCA locations (look for senior-friendly programming in your neighbourhood)
- Local walking clubs, if physically able to participate
- Your local church, synagogue or other religious space (these organizations often host community events, coffee hours and other senior-friendly activities)
Remember, our Personal Support Workers (PSWs) would be glad to accompany your aging loved ones to these locations. Not only will this encourage them to attend and participate, it adds a layer of safety that gives families peace of mind.
