The first long weekend of summer is here, and many families are looking forward to spending some quality time together while celebrating ‘Canada’s birthday.’ Whether you’re heading to the cottage, hosting a backyard BBQ, working on your garden or taking it easy here in Toronto, we hope you’re able to relax, unwind and enjoy yourself.
If your aging loved ones are included in your long weekend plans, consider taking some time to ensure that all gatherings will be safe, comfortable and accessible for them. This will help things run smoothly and allow everyone to have the best possible experience. And if you’ll be out of town this weekend, please know that our skilled, dedicated caregivers will be here to support your aging loved ones as needed. Their well-being is of the utmost importance to us, and we’re glad to provide both care and companionship. Happy Canada Day—we hope you have a safe, happy and healthy long weekend!
A few reminders from our team
As we get ready for the Canada Day long weekend, here are a few reminders from the Living Assistance Services team:
- As temperatures here in the Greater Toronto Area continue to be hot and humid, please remember that seniors are at higher risk of dehydration and heat stroke. Here are some tips to help your aging loved ones stay safe in extreme weather. While older individuals are more prone to these issues, these summer safety tips apply to the whole family!
- Many seniors have fond memories of Canada Day celebrations over the years, so feel free to lean into that nostalgia and make it special for them. This may include hanging a small Canada flag on a window in their home (or even on their walker, if they use one) and helping them dress in red and white clothing on Canada Day. You can also enjoy Canadian foods, listen to Canadian music or watch your favourite Canadian film or television show together. Our caregivers can also incorporate these ideas into their shift with your loved one.
- If your aging loved ones are able to safely attend a local parade, outdoor concert or fireworks display, they may enjoy this type of outing. (Please note that fireworks may be overwhelming to seniors with dementia or other cognitive challenges.)
- If you need to cancel, change or add a shift to your Personal Support Worker (PSW)’s schedule, please contact us. We will be available by phone and email all weekend for your convenience.
Happy Canada Day
We feel very fortunate to live here in Canada and enjoy the many great things this country has to offer. The Living Assistance Services team would like to wish all of our clients, caregivers and their families a safe and happy holiday weekend. Happy Canada Day!
