Here’s a quick but important reminder: Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday, May 12th!
Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to show love and gratitude to all of the moms, grandmothers, and other mother figures in our lives, whether that includes a caring stepmom, an especially loving aunt, or the type of family friend who feels like family. While younger moms may be the ones in the thick of parenting, Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate caregivers in all ages and stages of life, including the seniors in your family (especially those who contributed to your upbringing).
Here are three ways to make Mother’s Day feel special for seniors. Thanks for reading and have a wonderful weekend!
A heartfelt card
It’s great to call your mother and wish her a happy Mother’s Day—better yet if you can deliver these wishes in person!—but don’t forget to prepare a thoughtful, heartfelt card as well. Not only is this a simple but meaningful gesture that allows you to express your appreciation in writing, it offers a keepsake that can be displayed as a reminder of your gratitude and affection. If you have kids of your own, ask them to make their own cards for Grandma, too! A homemade card or picture from a child is something nearly every senior enjoys receiving, and this weekend is the ideal time to create something special.
A thoughtful gift
Seniors often say they don’t want more “stuff” on Mother’s Day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t offer a thoughtful gift. Consumable products, houseplants or experience-based gifts often fit the bill, as do small sentimental items. For example: consider framing a photograph of their grandchildren or baking a batch of their favourite cookies. You can prepare a gift basket of their favourite foods, a refill of their favourite perfume or shower supplies, a selection of herbal teas, or something practical but enjoyable, like a set of fluffy new towels if their old ones are worn. If your aging loved one listens to audiobooks, give them a gift card for their favourite digital bookstore. You can also get them a gift card to their favourite restaurant, garden centre, spa, hair stylist or nail salon, if they’re able to visit those places with support. As long as it’s something that demonstrates effort and care, it should be warmly received!
Quality time
While a card and a bouquet of fresh flowers is always a lovely gift, quality time is often highest on a senior’s wish list. If you’re able to spend some time with your aging loved ones over the Mother’s Day weekend, everything else will be the cherry on top. Consider bringing them lunch or dinner, taking them to brunch at a nearby restaurant, or spending some time playing cards or board games as a family. Share stories, memories and laughter—these moments are often taken for granted, but can be the best gift of all.
