The weather in southern Ontario continues to be intense, and we’re currently experiencing yet another heatwave in the city. Even with the help of cold drinks and air conditioning, the heat can be a lot to manage. We’ve mentioned this on the blog before, but it’s very important to prioritize hydration and know the signs of heat stroke in seniors.
If your aging loved ones are feeling the heat, they may not be interested in hot meals, which can lead to decreased food intake. If this is the case, consider making a few nutritious dishes that can be prepared ahead of time and served cold, which may be more appealing to your loved ones. Our Personal Support Workers (PSWs) would be pleased to prepare and/or serve these meals during their shift—please visit our website or contact us to learn more about high quality homecare services in Toronto, Mississauga and the surrounding areas.
Marinated bean salad
There are endless variations of bean salad, but they all have similar benefits: they’re high in protein and nutrients like iron, and they taste great. Here’s an excellent three bean salad recipe that can be prepared ahead of time and kept in the fridge for several days. Serve it as a light lunch or add some chilled salmon, steak or chicken to the plate for a heartier evening meal.
Deviled eggs
Delicious as a snack or as part of a meal, deviled eggs appeal to many seniors as they’re tasty, easy to eat and familiar. Consider serving a meal that includes deviled eggs, a grain-based salad and some sliced fruit or vegetables. You could also serve deviled eggs on or beside a slice of avocado toast. These meals are filling, nutritious and easy to enjoy on a hot day.
Chicken salad
Chicken salad can be eaten in a sandwich, on top of a green salad, mixed with chilled pasta and vegetables, or even with crackers. It’s delicious and high in protein, making it an ideal choice for many older individuals. Consider adding minced celery and bell peppers for added flavour and nutrition. You can also make tuna salad or egg salad to use in the same meal preparations.
Quiche
A homemade or store-bought quiche is a great option for seniors who want a simple, nutritious lunch or dinner. Look for one that includes vegetables as well as protein—broccoli and cheese, ham and broccoli, spinach with bell peppers, bacon and asparagus or another tasty combination. Quiche can be served chilled or warm—just add a salad or some fresh fruit on the side.
Chicken and quinoa salad
Here’s a great recipe for chicken and quinoa salad that many seniors will enjoy. This protein-packed meal can be adapted to your aging loved one’s taste by adding or removing different vegetables. You could also try using shrimp or salmon instead of chicken, or even replacing the meat with hard-boiled eggs. This makes a great lunch or summer dinner! Please note that this recipe isn’t ideal for seniors who have trouble swallowing rice, as quinoa has a similar size and texture.
